Maya

(Sold) 40 x 50in. charcoal on paper

Maya is my latest piece and with her grand appearance is the star of the collection. Maya started as a blank piece of paper that was bigger than me. I had never drawn a portrait of this scale before. Charcoal in its nature is unforgiving with its dark and harsh color on a white canvas. Because of this, I draw left to right and top to bottom to ensure that I am not wiping the charcoal across the page with my arm. Given the size of this portrait, it took dedicated prep time before beginning the drawing to map out each section and figure out where to sit to methodically produce this piece. I wanted to draw a female figure larger than life. Her beauty and power to emerge from the page grab the attention of everyone in her vicinity.
