Sambhav

(Sold) 26 x 24in. charcoal on paper

In high school I traveled to Jaipur, India, to volunteer at a school in an impoverished area. I spent two weeks teaching the students English and introducing them to various art forms. Every day, in between classes, I learned about their stories, hopes, and dreams. They impacted and taught me more than I probably imparted to them. When I returned home, I wrote my senior year thesis on their educational access in hopes of sharing their stories with the rest of the world. Sambhav is the Sanskrit word for a source of bliss/happiness. This drawing represents how despite their daily struggles, those students still managed to find some source of happiness along the way.
